Examinations

Paralegal Practice in Polokwane, Examinations will be written during the first semester (June) and the second semester (October). It is required that learners submit one assignment per module. Learners must achieve a minimum of 50% per assignment. Two Modules will be written during June (Module 1, and 2) and three Modules during October (Module 3, 4 and 5).

97228 – NATIONAL CERTIFICATE: PARALEGAL PRACTICES

A paralegal works in different sectors or fields. A paralegal can work the following:

    • This qualification means after completion, one becomes a semi law person.
    • This leads the learner to work for organisations such as the Department of Justice (serving summons for the courts), working with law firms taking statements from witnesses, tracing people such as witnesses, accused people, missing persons, etc.
    • The semi law person can also assist the community or their clients with the drawing up of application of bail papers or any other court application.
    • They can also represent suspected transgressors in Disciplinary Hearing cases.
    • A community advice centre whereby the paralegal can offer basic free of charge for legal advice to people who cannot afford a lawyer.
    • Service organisations such as NGO’s (Non-Governmental Organisations) and law firms that need paralegal skills, for example, giving advice, monitoring abuses of rights or understanding and simplifying the law.
    • Trade unions. A paralegal is needed in Trade Unions where he/she should be familiar with the basic principles of labour law and labour relations.
    • Commercial law firms whereby the paralegal would be required to take statements and conduct legal research or even refer people to other organisations.
    • Inside the legal system some paralegals are needed and their tasks include helping magistrates to reach fair decisions in criminal cases.
    • These paralegals should have basic knowledge of the law and court procedures.

Range: Communication refers to written and oral communication

    • Advise, counsel and represent clients in a variety of formal and alternative settings
    • Produce legal documents in a paralegal context and prepare and draft legal documents in a legal context
    • Solve problems in a paralegal context by working in a team and individually
    • Manage administration, including financial administration, and provide organisational support in an office environment
    • Exercise ethical conduct, values and professionalism when dealing with internal and external clients
