Occupational Certificate-Diesel Fitter

NQF Level: NQF Level 04
Minimum Credits: 540

Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirements for the Occupational Certificate in Diesel Mechanic qualification is NQF Level 1 qualification with a pass in Mathematics.

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with knowledge and skills that will prepare them to operate as a Diesel Fitter. A qualified learner will be able to:

  • Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on diesel powered systems.
  • Dismantle, inspect, assess, repair and reassemble diesel powered systems and related system components.
  • Diagnose and repair faults in diesel powered systems and related system components.

Rationale:

The Occupational Certificate: Diesel Fitter is designed to provide learners with knowledge and skill that will prepare them to operate as a Diesel Fitter. A Diesel Fitter maintains, tests, repairs and rebuilds diesel motors used for generating power in marine, mining, construction, industrial and rail transport applications. Diesel-powered systems are used by private individuals, private sector businesses, state entities and government departments for a variety of purposes.

Many of these systems are stationary applications such as diesel powered generators, compressors, pumps, and refrigeration and construction equipment. Others are found in propulsion systems in non-vehicle applications such as boats, ships and trains. Users of these diesel systems require that they are well-maintained, operate efficiently and conform to Original Equipment Manufacturers' (OEM) standards and specifications. Diesel-powered systems form an essential part of the country's social, economic and infrastructural activities.

This means that qualified diesel fitters will be able to find employment in a wide range of end-user contexts. Qualified learners will also find employment in independent workshops providing maintenance and repair services to users of diesel-powered systems, and will be recognised as skilled artisans. This qualification will also enable qualifying learners to keep abreast of on-going technological developments in diesel engines and provide a basis for further career development.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

  1. Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on diesel powered systems and related system components.
  2. Dismantle, inspect, assess, repair and assemble diesel powered systems and related system components.
  3. Diagnose and repair faults in diesel powered systems and related system components.
